Support for international students

We understand the many opportunities and challenges that being an international student presents for your future career plans and offer tailored support to our students from overseas to allow you to build on your studies here.

As well as having access to all of our central services, you will find information below on the specific support available to you. So whether your future career plan is to look for work or further study in the UK, in your home country, or another country, we can support you to investigate all of the options.

International careers

The Careers Service international careers resource supports students looking for international opportunities, including employment, further study, work experience and voluntary work. Countries also include a link to Going Global offering career guides, jobs, placements and an employer database.

Navigating your way through the Careers Calendar 2022/23 for International Students A useful resource to help you quickly learn about the employability support activities at University and with external organisations. Includes direct links to recruitment websites and information which will save you time.

Applying for a Placement Year – Information all international students should know  For undergraduate international students looking to experience work after their 2nd year. Advises on how to prepare, the benefits of a placement and where to look for roles.

How to explain your visa status to employers At some point during a recruitment process an employer will ask about your right to work in the UK. This paper gives you examples of how you might write or speak about this with the recruiter. You can also access visa information and support documents that can be sent to a company to help their understanding of different employment options with a variety of visas.

Applying for Graduate Jobs in China (Returnees in 2023) A summary of how graduate recruitment works in China. Includes when to apply, how to prepare for success and which job websites advertise roles for returning Chinese students.

Here you will find international opportunities for internships, trainee positions, apprenticeships and graduate positions from companies around the world. To activate your account, just login using your university student email.

Visa Support

We are happy to discuss your options for finding work in the UK after your studies, however, we are not qualified to provide VISA advice. For individual immigration advice, please contact ISSAC (International Student Support, Advice and Compliance).

ISSAC have a presence on Level 3 of the SU.  They are currently based opposite the SSiD office from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday for drop-ins.
