Work experience

Developing your skills through work experience alongside your studies (if you’re able to) can help you gain sector and industry insight to inform your career decision making. It’s an opportunity to try out a role for a short period of time and develop your professional network. Gaining work experience during your degree can take many forms including

As a postgraduate student you have the opportunity to take on a company-based dissertation project with a local or national organisation. A company project usually involves you addressing a particular issue or challenge encountered by the business. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your employability skills, enhance your CV, and help an organisation develop through your insight. You then use your findings as the basis of your dissertation as well as providing a business report to the organisation.

You will receive direct communications about company dissertation projects from the employability team and academics at key stages. There is a programme of information and coaching sessions that will support you in your application and ensure you make the most out of these opportunities.

The Management School provides opportunities to undertake a 60 Hour Project which is a short business project within local companies over the Easter holidays. In order to ensure these opportunities are accessible, we provide an enabling bursary to students who are successfully matched to a project through a competitive recruitment process. This bursary can be used to pay for childcare, professional clothing and travel etc.

Our External Relations team work tirelessly to engage businesses across the region and support our clients to scope short but meaningful projects around real word challenges or opportunities they are working on.

We will contact you at key stages with information supplied directly to your inbox through specific emails and our weekly Employability Hub Headlines.

The University of Sheffield internship programme offers the chance to complete a 35 or 70 hour internship with an academic or professional service department within the university.

The internships are open to final year undergraduate and postgraduate taught students to apply for and will provide you with valuable work experience and skills development opportunities to help transition into the world of work and prepare you for future employment.

The SME Summer Internship Programme allows eligible students to undertake a paid summer internship with SMEs and charities in the Sheffield City Region. Explore the SME Summer Internship Programme here.
