Case Study

Megan Ong

Full job title
Marketing Manager, Global Luxury Brands at IHG

As a Marketing Manager, I use the skills that I learned in my third year module, Integrated Marketing Communications, almost every day. Putting together business plans and giving persuasive and effective presentations is a large part of my role, and these are all skills that I learnt in my degree.

How has your degree benefited you in your current role?
Firstly, The University of Sheffield is a well-recognised university so having that on my CV was a great start upon graduating. The Business Management degree gave me a broad understanding of the different aspects of business before I specialised in one area of interest, which came to help me in my current role as I understand how the business works.

One part I am grateful for is how international and diverse the course was, which is reflective of big global companies. Learning to adapt to different cultures is a soft skill that has really benefitted me in my current role.

Is there any specific part of your degree that you use in your day-to-day job?
As a Marketing Manager, I use the skills that I learnt in my third year module, Integrated Marketing Communications, almost every day. Also, a large part of my job is putting together business plans and giving persuasive and effective presentations – these are all skills that I learnt in my degree.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?

My degree combined with co-curricular activities and internships not only prepared me for my jobs but also gave me an edge over other graduates out of University.
